Seth Jones

Seth Jones, born on October 3, 1994, in Arlington, Texas, is one of the most physically imposing and talented defensemen in the National Hockey League. Selected fourth overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft — the highest a Black American player had ever been drafted at the time — Jones has combined exceptional skating, size, and hockey intelligence to establish himself as a franchise defenseman and one of the most important players in the Chicago Blackhawks' rebuilding efforts.

Jones's background is unique in professional hockey. His father, Popeye Jones, was a professional basketball player who played in the NBA for ten seasons. Growing up in a family steeped in professional sports provided Seth with both the genetic athletic gifts and the understanding of professional sports culture that would serve him well in his hockey career. Despite growing up in Texas and later Colorado — neither traditional hockey markets — Jones developed a passion for the sport that eventually led him to the U.S. National Team Development Program and subsequently the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League.

His junior career with the Winterhawks was outstanding. Jones quickly established himself as the top defenseman in the WHL, earning accolades and attracting attention from NHL scouts who marveled at his combination of size (6 feet 4 inches, 210 pounds), skating ability, and defensive maturity. His selection by the Nashville Predators at fourth overall was no surprise, and he made the jump to the NHL immediately, becoming a regular in Nashville's lineup from his first season.

Jones's time with the Nashville Predators established his reputation as a top-pairing defenseman capable of playing heavy minutes in all situations. His partnership with Ryan Ellis gave the Predators one of the NHL's best defensive pairings, and his contribution to Nashville's run to the 2017 Stanley Cup Final was significant. A trade to the Columbus Blue Jackets in January 2016 provided Jones with a larger role and increased responsibility. His performances in Columbus — including a remarkable 2020-21 season in which he scored 28 points in 56 games while logging massive minutes — confirmed his status among the NHL's elite defensemen.

The trade to the Chicago Blackhawks in July 2021, accompanied by a massive eight-year, $76 million contract extension, positioned Jones as the centerpiece of Chicago's defensive rebuilding effort. The Blackhawks' decision to invest so heavily in Jones reflected their belief that his talent and leadership would be essential to the franchise's return to competitiveness. While the team's rebuilding process has been challenging, Jones has maintained his individual standard of play and served as a stabilizing presence for a young and developing roster.

Jones's playing style is defined by his physical attributes and technical skills. His skating is exceptional for a player of his size — he generates speed quickly, transitions smoothly between offense and defense, and uses his edges effectively to maintain positioning. His reach, combined with his skating, allows him to cover enormous amounts of ice, closing gaps on opposing forwards and recovering defensive position even after aggressive offensive pinches.

Defensively, Jones is reliable and consistent. His stick positioning disrupts passing lanes, his body positioning guides attackers to less dangerous areas of the ice, and his physical play discourages opponents from establishing position in front of his net. His penalty killing is effective, and he is trusted in late-game defensive situations when his team is protecting a lead.
