Samuel Richard Darnold was born on June 5, 1997, in Dana Point, California. Growing up in the coastal city of Southern California, Darnold was immersed in sports from an early age. He attended San Clemente High School where he became one of the most highly recruited quarterback prospects in the nation, earning a four-star rating and multiple scholarship offers from top programs across the country.

Darnold chose to attend the University of Southern California, where he made an immediate impact. As a redshirt freshman in 2016, he led the Trojans to a Rose Bowl victory over Penn State, throwing for 453 yards and five touchdowns in one of the most memorable Rose Bowl performances in history.
